Prompt: Perception
Perception can be defined as the process, act, or faculty of perceiving or the effect or product of perceiving. (education.yahoo.com) Many people perceive me as being "ghetto" or "gangster" and these are false accusations. I wear baggy clothes because that's what makes me comfortable and that's what type person I am. I embrace hip-hop to the fullest, and I tend to follow alot of its trends as far as name brand clothes and shoes. My clothes maybe baggy but I bet they're clean and they're on point. That doesn't make me any worse than someone who wears Abercrombie or Hollister clothes.
I have been locked up and harassed by the Macon Police department and accused of being a drug dealer. Just recently I was handcuffed and thrown in the back of a squad car because he say that there was suspicion that my car was stolen all because I have a nice car with rims. I never sold drugs in my life, and everything I have Ive worked for. And to this day I don't point the finger and blame nobody.
In my eye everyone should be given the benefit of the doubt until proven other wise. I think its true that you cant judge a book by its cover. You can not fully understand a person until you have walked in their footsteps and lived your life in their shoes. And even then you cant understand that person. Everybody was not made the same so of course our decision making is going to be different. What a person lives by and practice on a daily routine, has everything to do with their judgements.
How many people have ever played the game where the teacher start off with a phrase, and whisper it in one students ear and that student has to whisper it in another students ear, and by the time it gets all the way around the phrase has changed completely. That's a good example of how people distort information. You can tell two people the same thing and they look at it completely different, because they are two different people. One may distort information that the other thought were key points. And your perception of this person is the wrong way about this person.
Since I was younger, Ive had prejudices against people who embrace the Confederate flag. In my opinion the Confederate flag symbolized slavery and segregation. And now it is a trend more than ever. As a person living in Georgia, I have been a witness that racism is still very much alive. And every time I see a Confederate flag all I can say to myself is that "There goes another person that don't like black people". I don't dwell on it, but its a thought that crosses my mind. I may not ever know why people wouldn't like black people and what the Confederate flag means to them, all I can say is that black people have came to far to even worry about it.
